Born in 1938， Alton Ellis grew up in Trench Town， Jamaica. Born into a musical family & learning thepiano at a young age， he started his career in 1959 as part of the duo ?Alton & Eddie? with EddiePerkins. They recorded for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One， where they had a massive hit with ?Muriel?. He laterwent onto form a duo with John Holt， but after Holt joined ?The Paragons?， Ellis formed the ?Flames?recording for both Dodd and Duke Reid on the Treasure Isle label.
