第一弾の『Pirates of the Caribbean(邦題『パイレーツ・オブ・カリビアン/呪われた海賊たち』)』のサントラは、慌てて製作されたために評判は今ひとつだった。
第二作ではハンス・ジマーが仕切り、彼のキャリアの中でも最高の手間暇をかけて作りあげている。
サントラの冒頭は、小気味よいチェロで始まる。
ジョニー・デップ演じる役柄のテーマ曲、「Jack Sparrow」だ。
そして、ジマーが交響楽で大いに戦闘気分を煽る「The Kraken(邦題「?深海の魔物?クラーケン」)」から、一連の壮大な曲がその後に続くことになる。
ハリウッドの重役たちが現代のサントラはかくあるべしと固く信じている傾向に明らかに従っている曲でも、ジマーは、おもしろおかしいひねりを加えている。
わななく女性の声とパーカッションの連打の両方を「Dinner Is Served(邦題「ディナーの席」)」に取り入れているが、この曲はふいに狂気のワルツに変わる。
ダニー・エルフマンがよく使う手法だ。
シリーズものとしてはお約束で、一作目の映画の曲があちらこちらに顔を出している。
「Black Pearl(邦題「 ブラックパール号」)」のテーマが「I’ve Got My Eye on You(邦題「もう逃げられないぞ」)」や「Hello Beastie(邦題「ハロー、獣たち」)」に再び登場しているのだ。
だが、本作は前作よりも統一感がある。
少なくとも、ボーナス・トラックにたどりつくまでは。
こちらはメロディック・トランスの帝王DJティエストによる、ドラムの効いたバージョンになっている。
海賊よ、軽く手を振って、気にしていないと自分に言いきかせよう。
