The Specials followed up their classic Elvis Costello-produced debut with 1980’s More Specials， arguably an even better record than its predecessor. This time， head honcho Jerry Dammers revised the ’it’s trad Dad’ ska approach， drawing on a diverse range of musical influences， in particular easy listening， exotica and jazzy soundtracks. Fundamentally， Dammers ditched Channel 1 for Radio 2. Although certain sections of the band were as non-plussed as their record company Chrysalis， and much of the album failed to translate live， commercially the LP proved a success. The first half consists of familiar， ska-inspired tracks， the best of which are the lilting ’Do Nothing’ and ’Man At C&A’， an eerie paean to nuclear paranoia and obvious precursor to ’Ghost Town’. Dammers neo-lounge direction dominates the second half of More Specials. Despite the Latin percussion， flamenco flourishes and vibe effects， the overall mood is bleak， personified by the woozy， council lad lament ’Sterotypes’. 20 years ahead of it’s time， More Specials is a must have; this remastered， digitally enhanced version features the videos to ’Rat Race’ and ’Ghost Town’.--Chris King
