Kaos is a blockbuster of an album. Big in every sense it stomps through your speakers like an untamed rap Godzilla let loose from its cage. Starting with Redman’s magnificent ?Smash Sumthin? and going into M.O.P’s ?Stand Clear? it’s never less than a surround sound show of power hip-hop ripping up everything in its vicinity. Bizarrely it’s all been produced by Adam F， a UK drum and bass artist and son of 70s Glam rocker Alvin Stardust. It’s the biggest breakthrough for a UK producer since Soul II Soul’s Nelle Hooper went to work for Madonna. Adam F has arranged a fantastic array of top-line names and given them hip-hop of the most dramatic， barnstorming nature. Legend has it his slowed down drum and bass beats were heard by LL Cool J who asked him to work on his last album， G.O.A.T. Adam F produced the title track (which he’s snagged for this album) and suddenly the doors to the US rap industry were wide open. Employing grand orchestration， ten-ton brass sections and the chunkiest of funk he captures the bombastic side of American hip-hop in a way that even few US producers manage. This is not an original album in the way， say， Mos Def’s Black On Both Sides is， but an extremely well-done slice of mainstream hip-hop. No doubt there’ll be a sequel. --Jake Barnes
