戦後のすばらしいオーケストラ作品のひとつとされて喝采（かっさい）を浴びたベンジャミン・フランケルの一連の交響曲、それをレコード化して高い評価を得たのに続き、CPOレーベルはこの作曲家の映画音楽作品を集めたシリーズを発売する。
フランケルのスコアで飾られた劇場用、TV用の映画は105本あるが、「バルジ大作戦」（1965年）はその最後の作品で、彼の映画音楽の傑作でもある。
「史上最大の作戦」や「大脱走」並みのスケールを反映して音楽は78分以上あるが、完成した映画ではミキシングのレベルが低かったため、音楽の大半は今回のリリースによって初めてきちんと聴けるようになった。
スリリングなモーターのリズムに満ちた壮大な戦闘シーンから、伝統的なクリスマス・キャロルが挿入された一瞬の平和を経て、捕虜（ほりょ）たちの大虐殺という恐怖の場面まで、これはまさに巨大なカンヴァスに描かれた映画音楽である。
サウンドは大胆にしてダイナミック、これまでもウェルナー・アンドレア・アルベルトの指揮のもと、フランケルの音楽を数多くレコード化してきたクィーンズランド交響楽団も、きびきびとした感動的な演奏でこたえている。
フランケルのヴィジョンがもつパワーが全面的に解き放たれるのは、ヴァイオリン協奏曲「600万人を偲んで」においてで、これはハリウッドにインスパイアされてというよりも、第2次世界大戦の恐ろしさに対するフランケルの個人的な、心の奥底からの反応なのである。

Battle of the Bulge (1965) was the last of 105 film， theatre and television productions to be graced with a Frankel score， and is his film-music masterpiece.
