From Amazon.co.uk A decidedly superior Copland collection, this, perfect for anyone wishing to explore beyond his famous ballet triptych of Appalachian Spring, Rodeo and Billy the Kid. The suite that Copland compiled from his score for the 1948 movie The Red Pony remains one of his most lovable achievements, and Andrew Litton and his Dallas band respond with delectable poise and plenty of affectionate ardour. Both here and in the frequently jaw-dropping Organ Symphony of 1924 there’s tough competition from Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony (RCA). In the latter piece, there’s little to choose between the two accounts, and both (British) soloists are quite superb (Simon Preston for Slatkin, the exciting Wayne Marshall for Litton). That just leaves the exhilaratingly inventive and anarchic Music for Theater (another early work, completed the year after the Organ Symphony). Again, by the side of Hugh Wolff’s superb Teldec version (part of an unmissable Ultima twofer), Litton slightly underplays the bawdier elements of the ?Dance? and ?Burlesque?. Otherwise, all goes spiffingly. Close-knit, but superbly focused and atmospheric sound. -- Andrew Achenbach
