ドゥーワップのグループには一見単純な暗黙の了解がある。
それは、グループ名を鳥（レンズ、フラミンゴズ）か車（キャデラックス、エルドラドズ）にちなんで名づけ、近所の路地の曲がり角かあるいは菓子屋の裏で2~4パートに分かれてハーモニーを練習し、恋人をどれほど愛しているかについて歌うということだ。
