This is the third of Shostakovich’s early ballets， and the one that got him into the most trouble. It was enjoying a successful run at the same time as his opera， Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk， when Stalin saw both works and was horrified. The resulting ostracism almost destroyed Shostakovich， both as a composer and as a person， and it was only after he composed the Fifth Symphony that he was officially ’rehabilitated.’ This is all the more surprising when you consider that the musical language of this ballet is much more conservative than the previous two examples. It’s not great music， but it’s never less than entertaining， and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky makes the most of it. --David Hurwitz
