For this book， the proceedings of Falk Symposium 92 held in St Petersburg， Russia， June 21-22 1996， a series of topics in diseases of the liver and biliary system with important progress in diagnosis and therapy was chosen. The aim of the symposium was to enable a better elucidation of the basic mechanisms which are responsible for the clinical phenomena and the application of these results for diagnosis and therapy. Experts in various fields of liver diseases presented the state of the art in basic science as well as the consequences for practical medicine.
