写真家にもタイプはさまざまある。
たとえば対象との稀有な出会いそのものに重きを置き、その出会いのために旅を重ねたり、長い時間をかけてもその稀有な瞬間を待ち受けようとする人。
はたまた町の裏道に遊ぶ子どもや、テーブルの上のオブジェといったなじみ深い対象をまったく新しい視点で見、はっとするような定義のし直し方をする人。
この例で選べば、本書の写真家ハロルド・ファーンスタインは後者だろう。
徹底したクローズアップの手法で、見慣れた花の「命」の構造に切実に迫り、息をのませる。
しかも冷たい科学写真とは似て非なりだ。
それどころか、優れたドキュメンタリーのように誠実に厳しく詳細を語り、雌しべの繊毛1本1本の様子まで報告する彼の写真を見るとき、かえって哀切なロマンチシズムが胸にせまる。
背景の黒をたっぷり残し、少し紗をかけて枝ぶりごと見せたバラには、ほとんどなまめかしい艶やかさがある。
なまめかしさといってもオキーフの描いた花のような濃い官能ではなく、もっと穏やかなセクシネス。
その「余白」の息遣いに、ふとあのフレーミング（スペーシング）の神様、ロバート・ドワノーを思い出す。
日常の1シーンを通りすがりに切り取り、「撮影していないもの」すなわち画面の「スペース」にも雄弁に物語を語らせる写真家だ。
ファーンスタインが人や風景を撮ればどういう写真になるのか、と想像せずにはいられない。
万物に通じる事実（真実）を息をのむ美しい花々の画像をとおして探り、真実が美しいものばかりではないことをしばし忘れさせてくれる写真集である。
