コーチングに関する本は多数出版されているが、本書は、コーチを養成する専門機関、コーチ大学の創設者によって書かれた本である。
さらに本書を翻訳したのは、ボストンコンサルティングを経て、ベンチャー企業の支援を行うドリームインキュベーターを設立した堀紘一である。
堀は冒頭にて、「こんな人が結局『得』をしている！」と題して、本書のポイントを解説している。
それによると堀は、「貸しはあっても借りは少ない」人生を理想と語っているが、21章にわたって本書で述べられていることは、まさに人生における「貸し」を、いかに自然に、無理なく作っていくかという方法に尽きる。
各章のタイトルは、「『自分本位』になれない人は偽善者だ」「自分の魅力・才能を?最高値?で売り出す法」といった刺激的な言葉が並ぶが、さまざまなエピソードやキーワードを織り交ぜながらも、追求しているのは、「損して得取る」方法、ただひとつといえよう。
ビジネスの世界には、「顧客本位主義」という言葉があるが、本書に書かれている内容も、それに通じるものがある。
自分が得をしたいのなら、まず他人に対して得をさせるべきだが、それが自分に無理を強いるようなものであれば、する意味はないというのが、本書の主張である。
