Book Description
A brooding thriller that asks big questions. You care about the people asking them, and take the answers seriously. A story of love and luck and carelessness. Al Deforest make a mistake 50 years ago. As a result, he’s a traitor and a murderer. But that was then and this is now. These days, he enjoys his painting, his restorations, and the far end of his life. He doesn’t need ghosts from the past, but he has them. Someone spilled the beans. June 1945: shy brilliant Al leaves Tillamook, Oregon for the Army. He’s untroubled by the Army because the war is almost over. He imagines a peacetime hitch and then the GI Bill for college. His firecracker girlfriend Mandy has plenty to worry about, though. Mandy is ambitious; she knows Al can be anything in the world, but she fears he will settle for a third-rate career in the Army. Al’s hitch is anything but peaceful. He is destined to fly and fight in a flawed espionage operation known as Project Heat Lightning. Al is a quirky warrior, sometimes cowardly and sometimes magnificently brave. He wins the Medal of Honor. Unknown to his sponsors, he also collaborates with the enemy. He is caught in an ambush of his own making. Mandy gets her man back, brain-damaged and unemployable. The Deforests struggle to make a life in Los Angeles, but they can’t. They are forced back to Tillamook in defeat. The owner of a local funeral home takes pity and employs Al as an undertaker. Al’s brain injury has changed him. He’s ethereal now: soft-edged and artistic. He excels at undertaking because he cares about the dead. Each funeral is a penance for fallen comrades, for twenty young men who lie scattered across the Himalayan foothills and the green jungles of Burma. The Deforests grow wealthy and retire. Al receives a call from an investigative reporter who has purchased scraps of this highly classified military service file. If the truth comes out he will face charges of treason and murder. Unless the elderly couple can think of something, their rich life will disappear.
